Zoos in Karnataka
Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Garden (Mysore Zoo)
About:
Founded in 1892 under royal patronage, the Mysore Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world. Also known as Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Garden, this zoo was built from part of the King's summer palace (Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar).
The zoo is home to a variety of rare and exotic wild
animals, including green anacondas, elephants, lions, tigers and giraffes. It
is the only zoo in India to have gorillas. Fans of bird watching should arrive
early, the section of the aviary closing at 17 hours. The zoo also runs an
"animal adoption program", in which the general public is encouraged
to adopt animals during a given period. Another feather in the hat of this zoo
is that it is a "No Plastic Zone", and even if you wear plastic bags,
they will give you paper bags to keep your things.
The best time to visit the Mysore Zoo is during the summer holidays. You can also plan a trip around the Dussehra festival or enjoy the spectacle of the New Year celebrations! The zoo is conveniently located in the eastern part of the city, about 3 km from the bus station and 2 km from Mysore Palace.
Bannerghatta Biological Park
About:
About 23 km south of Bangalore is a magnificent retreat.
The Bannerghatta Biological Park is where the Forestry Department rehabilitated
lions and tigers (rescued from circuses and elsewhere) in semi-wild areas.
There is a zoo, a herbivore enclosure with blackbuck, bison, cheetal, sambar, a
butterfly garden, a bear enclosure and more. The Forestry Department also
offers a large safari covering all enclosures, an elephant trek, a short hike
and a longer trek.
Tourists are not allowed to enter the central areas of
Bannerghatta. Visitors must continue for 5 km to the entrance of Bannerghatta
Biological Park (BBP), open to visitors. It has become an area of interest
and more than 10 lakhs of visitors flock to the park each year to be closer to
big cats. The BBP includes a zoo (a short distance from the front doors,
right), with many mammals, reptiles and birds. There is also a small museum and
an auditorium in the zoo. The BBP office near the front door issues tickets to
the zoo and safaris.
The car park is near the entrance in front of the zoo.
There are several vendors of non-alcoholic beverages near the port of entry and
kiosks (operated by KSTDC) at the zoo. The herbivore enclosure (housing
blackbuck, bison, cheetal and sambar) is located on the right, a few kilometers
from the zoo. About 11/2 km from the gateway, near the Herbivores compound, is
the natural camp of the jungle lodges, run by the KSTDC.
